Balls for the holidays

December 10, 2012

The giant Christmas balls are back in front of 1251 Avenue of the Americas. It may be predictable, but they look good here. A year or two they were on Rockefeller Plaza near where Ruhlmann’s is, but this infinitely better.

The tree (before)

November 15, 2012

The Rockefeller Center tree was set up yesterday. Today, scaffolding will be constructed around it and decorating will take place for a couple weeks. Scaffolding comes down, then comes the big holiday lip-synching extravaganza on NBC which culminates in someone flicking the switch to light up the tree: Christmas in NYC for the month of December!

This way to the Rainbow Room

November 13, 2012

But keep on walking… the famed, landmarked restaurant 0n the 65th floor of 30 Rockefeller Plaza was open from 1934 until 2009 and is currently awaiting a new operator. It won’t be empty forever – the ground-floor neon signs aren’t coming down.

Controlling the traffic

A cell phone, held at a certain angle, becomes a remote control. The important man guides the traffic down the street narrowed by construction. I think he should be wearing a hard hat.

Christmas starts now

September 27, 2012

Mark this date: it’s September 27 and time to begin shopping for Christmas. Ornaments are out at Value Drugs, on the concourse of Rockefeller Center. I’d recommend the I Heart NY t-shirts because you get a lot of ornament for your money and they are NYC specific in a way that a shamrock isn’t.

Toting the orchid

September 6, 2012

Rockefeller Center was the site of NBC’s football season kick-off last night. Maybe this flower was part of the decorations, a delicate counterpoint to the manly crunching of players on the field.

Young friends and a beggar

August 7, 2012

By the Time-Life Building, food vendors line up their trucks and carts. Some are there every day, others are there Tuesdays and Thursdays, a few are even less regular. Hungry pigeons, though, are a constant.
