I can’t take my eyes or hands off these bitter melons. (They feel a little rubbery.) That’s the extent of my curiosity, though, because the taste is described so bitter it’s barely tolerable. Also known as karela (in Hindi) and paria (in Filipino), the vegetable is used in traditional and natural medicine to treat diabetes.

I’ll excuse the ironic name because it’s nice to find a cafe/diner, in north Astoria, on the watery side of Ditmars. People like Fatty’s for the burgers and brunch, especially. Elsewhere in the city, this place would be overrun by hipsters, but in this neighborhood, they are outnumbered by regular folk.
That’s what they said, Ride em’ cowboy, don’t let em throw you down, you’re the toughest cowboy in town. And I was! I survived the two-minute ride on the yellow bronc and then took myself to the adjacent 99-cent store for a treat. Even cowboys and girls get a blue shower curtain sometimes.
Witness the empty seats, lots of them. The long-term future of the W line, which runs weekdays, 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM, from Whitehall Street-South Ferry to Astoria-Ditmars Blvd. in Queens, remains unknown. There were plans to scrap the W, along with the Z, in 2008’s doomsday budget, but that didn’t happen. The W Train still clings to life.
Those are two words you always want to hear together, when the seafood is heading for a plate.
