What you’re looking at is a subway entrance, the L Train at 14th and First Avenue. The guy’s checking his phone because there’s no wifi downstairs, on a train or platforms. Not yet, anyway.


Sensible winter clothes: for another city

In NYC, when it’s freezing out, you can always dart into a store. There’s no reason to linger in the cold weather – that’s my theory why people rarely dress appropriately. Witness the sneakers and lack of hat.

Arts & crafts @ Union Square

The yearly crafts fair is on at Union Square. On the other side of the striped tent are dozens of merchants selling handmade objects and food, too. The stuff for sale is not 100% handmade, but it’s mostly not mass-produced, and to shop here is to support small (and tiny) businesses.

It’s called Himalayan pink salt, and you can put a slab of it on top of a stove burner and use as a cooking surface. Sounds interesting but faddish. Let’s revisit the topic in six months and see who is re-gifting the salt they got for the holidays.
