Animals by the Plaza

While artist and activist Ai Weiwei sits in a Chinese prison, his sculpture, “Circle of Animals/Zodiac Heads,” is installed for several months by the Pulitzer Fountain in front of the Plaza Hotel. The Chinese zodiac animals are modeled after versions designed in the 1800’s by European Jesuits for the Manchu emperor Qianlong for his European-style Summer Palace. The palace was ransacked and burned by British and French troops during the Second Opium War in 1860, which humiliated the Chinese. Some of the original animal heads began resurfacing worldwide in the last 15 years; China is attempting to collect as many of them as it can.
