For Valentine’s Day, flower vendors conveniently pop up on routes to the subway so people can grab a bunch to take to their sweethearts. (You’ll notice that on the phone booth there’s a Tiffany ad and a picture of a diamond ring the size of a softball.)

Macarons for Valentine’s

Two years ago we didn’t know a macaron from a macaroon. While they don’t approach the cupcake in popularity, the little cookies have found a place in our hearts and stomachs. La Maison du Macaron on West 23rd Street is highly rated by visitors. It carries a variety of flavors (and colors).

There are other things going on besides snow. Valentine’s Day is less than three weeks away! Get your candy hearts now or wait until the last minute – these one-pound bags won’t sell out. The small boxes are much more fun. How many candy hearts does a person really need?

In this kinder and gentler era, they’ve stripped Cupid of his bow and arrow. Now he hands out hearts. What I’ve also noticed this year is that Valentine’s Day seems to be more of an adult holiday than ever. Other than the “Cute Stuff” candy heart, little of this is for kids.
