One way here… and there

May 17, 2013

pros

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t these pedestrians have such determination and purpose that their actions appear almost scripted? Maybe we’re witnessing an impromptu theater piece by the Time Warner Center.

Port Authority angles

December 12, 2012

bus land

That’s the city’s bus depot, acres of dubiousness now situated across from a couple of swanky office buildings, including that of the NY Times. It’s a neighborhood forever in transition.

Stomp your foot if you like knits

on a grate

It’s Eighth Avenue: western fringes of the fashion district, or the southern area of the Port Authority neighborhood.

Grate walker near Times Square

December 9, 2012

with coffee

I’m used to not thinking about Times Square. Anyone who has been in NYC for a while remembers when the area was not known for Lion Kings, family entertainment, and M&M’s by the pound.

Pay phones close up

December 19, 2011

These phones look like a painting. In person, they are astonishingly grubby and make one thankful for reliable cell phone service and Formula 409.

Walk around

New Yorkers are usually doing several things at the same time, but when I’m bicycling in the city I need the use of both hands – to grip the handlebars and be available to make gestures at drivers who get in my way.

The new in newsstand

May 10, 2011

Five weeks ago I asked how long it was going to be before the old newsstand on this location came down. I’m not surprised to see this new metallic and glass structure, but I’m not sure why they need more than a dozen orange and white barriers to protect the thing.

Newsstand stripped bare

April 10, 2011

As expected, the corner of Eighth and 57th Street is down one newsstand. This is what the back wall looks like, sans magazines. Soon there will be a rectangular spot on the sidewalk marking where the newsstand stood. Then, who knows? Will a glassy new periodical dispensing facility appear?

Keep your umbrella handy

April 6, 2011

Rain, off and on, all week, that’s what you need to know. The lunchtime pedestrians, many of whom were caught unprepared, didn’t seems too annoyed when it started coming down pretty hard.
